Primary Objective: Cluster analysis of the following exercise parameters at different times of exercise:
- Thoracic expansion (as measured with respiratory inductance plethysmography)
- Abdominal expansion (as measured with respiratory inductance plethysmography)
- Thoracic expansion / Abdominal expansion ratio
- V’E(l/min) (breathing frequency * tidal breathing)
- Maximum oxygen uptake (ml/kg/min)
Achtergrond van het onderzoek
Rationale: It is unknown what breathing patterns athletes use during exercise.
Objective: The aim of this study is to analyse breathing patterns during high performance exercise in elite athletes at different modes of exercise while wearing a hexoskin® using an incremental exercise test as well as a power profile test.
Study design: Observational study.
Study population: Elite athletes who compete at least at national level.
Main study parameters/endpoints: Cluster analysis of the abdominal and thoracic extension, V’E and VO2 max at different times of exercise followed with cluster analysis for different breathing strategies.
Nature and extent of the burden and risks associated with participation, benefit and group relatedness: Elite athletes perform exercise testing on a regular basis, as wel as power profile testing. The only addition to this practice is to measure abdominal and thoracic expansion using a hexoskin®, a product already used by several athletes and study groups. We deem the added risk of these measurements, as addition to standard practice minimal.

In order to be eligible to participate in this study, a subject must meet all of the following criteria:
- Age > 16.
- Subjects would need to perform at least on a national level.
Belangrijkste redenen om niet deel te kunnen nemen (Exclusiecriteria)
A potential subject who meets any of the following criteria will be excluded from participation in this study:
- If the subject wears an internal electrical device (like Internal Automatic Defibrillator, pacemaker)
- If the subject wears a neurostimulator.
- If the subject required hospitalisation for illness 6 weeks prior to testing.
